Master of Landscape Arch.
Level 9, 240 credits
Part-time for a minimum of two-and-a-half years
Starts February 2006
8 places
Preferential applications by 1 February 2006 (late applications may be considered)
Programme code CA2304
Mt Albert campus
Indicative fee NZ$ 4150
Programme summary
The Master of Landscape Architecture gives landscape architecture practitioners a chance to further their skills, investigate new design techniques and collaborate with other professionals.
The degree is 'by project', which means that you undertake a design project based on an aspect of your practice to date. This project, informed by current theory and method, evolves over a two-and-a-half-year period during which you receive regular input from academic supervisors and a peer group of fellow research-by-design candidates.
You present your work in progress at twice-yearly workshops that are attended by practitioners and theorists of international standing, along with Unitec staff and local members of the landscape architecture community. This critique is then fed back into the development of your project.
Each year one Master of Landscape Architecture candidate will be offered the Fred Tschopp Snr Scholarship, a fees scholarship awarded to the owner of the best application portfolio.
The Master of Landscape Architecture, together with the Master of Architecture and the Master of Design, is part of a suite of design programmes at Unitec. Candidates in all three programmes combine for theory seminars and weekend workshops in order to foster cross-disciplinary fertilisation, new ideas and new approaches to inter-disciplinary practice.
Career opportunities
Senior landscape architect
Admission requirements
To be eligible for admission, applicants must meet either the general admission requirements or the special admission requirements. Applicants must also meet the English language requirements and the selection criteria.
General admission
Applicants must:
Have a recognised undergraduate degree with an average grade of B or higher in all level 7 courses, in a discipline appropriate to the proposed project; or
Hold a recognised postgraduate diploma in a discipline appropriate to the proposed project, with a B average.
Applicants must have a significant portfolio of professional work, sufficient to enable critical reflection on their practice, at the beginning of their programme of study.
Special admission
Applicants may be considered for special admission if they have a significant portfolio of completed work and:
Can demonstrate competencies equivalent to a bachelors-level graduate in the same or similar discipline; or
Hold a professional qualification in a relevant discipline, recognised as being equivalent to at least a three-year bachelors degree.
Applicants applying for special admission may be required to undertake additional related studies where it is considered necessary. The decision to admit applicants under the special admission requirements will be made by the Board of Postgraduate Studies.
English language requirements
Applicants must:
Have a minimum of 15 NCEA credits in English at level 2 of which four must be in Reading and four in Writing, or equivalent; or
Have successfully completed studies at levels 5 - 6 in an English medium; or
Have a grade of 5 or better in New Zealand Sixth Form Certificate English, or equivalent; or
Have an overall IELTS band score (Academic) of no less than 6.5 (with no band score lower than 6.0), or a TOEFL score of no less than 575, or equivalent, achieved within the last two years.
Selection criteria
Invited applicants will be required to present a portfolio of their design work to an interview panel. The applicant will be asked to discuss their professional history, the ideas contained within their presented work, their future interests and the area of research by design they are considering.
The format of the portfolio presentation is the choice of the applicant. Arrangements should be made beforehand if special viewing equipment is required.
Following the interviews, the Graduate Studies Academic Committee will make a final selection and notify applicants.
The following criteria will be used to judge the suitability of applicants:
Likelihood that they will benefit from the programme
Ability to complete the programme in an appropriate time frame while continuing to work
Unitec's capacity to provide supervision and resources.
