The MArch course is a flexible programme of study tailored to accommodate individual research interests and methodologies. It gives the student a unique opportunity to engage in one or two areas of advanced study: architectural design or written thesis.
Programme Aims
The Master of Architecture (MArch) aims to provide students, who have exhibited a high level of achievement in an undergraduate architecture programme, the opportunity to:
Develop and fulfil their ability to achieve higher standards
Obtain a qualification in recognition of their in-depth specialist knowledge
Develop talents and capabilities where they are strongest and specialise in the area of greatest proficiency
Equip themselves with the skills to address the new challenges of the profession by extending the range and level of qualification
Obtain direction and guidance in their continued academic development
Secure employment through their enhanced academic standing provided by the qualification.
The Master of Architecture course is a distinctive, flexible programme of study tailored to accommodate individual research interests and capabilities. It offers students an opportunity to engage in advanced study in theory, research and architectural design. Students can select from a range of theory units and specialist studio projects a personal programme of study that meets their own special interests and learning goals. Or they can follow a more prescribed programme of study leading to a MArch award with a specialist pathway in Urban Design, Development and Regeneration, Participatory Design or Urban Conservation.
The programme is offered in three stages: a PG Certificate Architecture; a PG Diploma Architecture; and a Master of Architecture (MArch). Students may begin the programme in September or February and they may study in part-time or full-time mode. The Master of Architecture is open to graduate architects, planners, landscape architects, engineers or any other discipline having the knowledge, skills and commitment to benefit from the programme.
Programme Structure
The Master of Architecture provides a balanced programme of study combining a range of theory and project units with opportunities for independent research. An Introductory Design unit provides a diagnostic tool for staff to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of students when they enter the programme and initiates new students into the rigours of Masters level study.
Opportunities for theoretical investigation are maximised and fully integrated throughout the programme. An introductory theory unit is intended to introduce theoretical issues across related areas of specialist study and to demonstrate similarities and differences in the focus of specialisms. More advanced independent study theory units encourage critical engagement with a wide range of current issues and are used to inform both written and project work. The Master of Architecture student chooses one from a range of advanced specialist theory units on offer.
Two specialist project units provide a platform for the practical, complementary development of themes discussed in the theory units.
Formal research training is also used to underpin both theory and design work. Basic skills are introduced in research methods seminars and further strengthened in Specialist Project units and in the production of a cultural context essay. This is an independent research project critically exploring the social and cultural context of specialist practice.
Finally, the Masters Thesis Project/Written Thesis gives considerable scope for the student to express original thought, creative ability and independent achievement.
As far as possible students are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning by being actively involved in decision-making about the course. They are encouraged to engage with practical and/or research problems that will further their personal career goals and begin the acquisition of knowledge and skills that will continue beyond the duration of the course. Students work alongside postgraduates in other subject areas within the School of Architecture. The common structure and integrated nature of the Masters programmes is intended to foster an efficient and educationally productive intermingling of students and to promote peer group teaching and learning.
