Interior Design is seen as an activity closely allied with architecture, but with its own particular focus, and is a discipline of increasing relevance to those concerned with environmental design. The programme offers students the opportunity to refine their personal approach to design through theory and practice, and to explore the relationship between the two. Open to both designers and architects, the course questions the confines and limitations of received practice.
Interior designers are specialists dealing with the immediate and the temporary and architects are generalists dealing with the long term and the permanent, but both are concerned with the making of interior space. The programme allows the exploration of both positions and, most importantly, the cross-fertilisation between them.
Course Aims
To further students' competencies in areas of individual practice.
To establish critical and theoretical engagements with interior design.
To engage students in a programme of research that will prepare them for further postgraduate study.
Key Features
There are two strands to the Postgraduate Certificate/ Diploma/MA in Interior Design, theoretical and practical. The theoretical strand examines the nature of Interior Design. Its purpose is to encourage students to engage critically with current issues and use their investigation to inform both written and project work. Theoretical exploration is central to the programme and will examine issues rooted in the idea that buildings can be understood as containers whose internal life is characterised and revealed through their surfaces, linings and fitments. The design units allow complementary foci be explored.
Specialist Design Project A affords the student the opportunity to develop a design project from a particular theoretical perspective and in addition to investigate light as a critical determinate in the quality of interior proposals.
Specialist Design Project B examines the impact of materials, in particular new or innovative products and technologies on design. The MA project unit will reflect the student's particular interest in Interior Design.
Units
A postgraduate Certificate in Interior Design is earned after 60 credit points of postgraduate study; a postgraduate Diploma in Interior Design is achieved after 120 credit points of study. The programme is comprised of the following units:
