Dual Master's Degree Option in Arch. & City & Reg. Planning
Category
Architecture
Description:
The Fields of Architecture and City and Regional Planning recognize that students entering Master's level programs in CRP and Architecture and already holding a Bachelor's degree in Architecture may want to pursue degree programs that increase their theoretical and technical knowledge in both architecture and planning. A dual degree option establishes requirements for a dual degree in both fields.
Core Requirements and Registration Units
The basic requirements of each program would be fulfilled with respect to registration units, core courses, and a final project or thesis. The requirements for the dual degree program will be 96 credit hours of course work taken at the graduate level. In general, course credits allowed by the Fields towards their respective degrees would be allowed towards the dual degree program; at least 36 of the required credit hours will be in courses offered by the Department of Architecture; 30 credit hours in Planning; and 30 credit hours in related course work, no more than 15 hours of which may be in Planning or Architecture courses.
Students may opt for two separate degree committees. We recommend, however, that students in the dual degree program select an advisor from the membership of each field. The two advisors will co-chair a special committee that will assist the student in all aspects of the program and approve the selection of courses. The special committee will be composed of co-chairs, one representing CRP, the other representing Architecture, and at least one additional member representing the student's major concentration in Architecture. The addition of a fourth member is optional.
Wherever courses are required by each field to satisfy degree requirements, the student will be expected to complete such courses. Electives will be selected by the student with the guidance of his or her advisors, according to a clearly defined direction of study. A thesis will be required to satisfy requirements for the M.Arch. degree. A final project (thesis, research paper, or final professional project) will be required to satisfy requirements for the M.R.P. degree. The student may prepare a joint thesis with the prior approval of his or her advisors.
More detailed information about the requirements for the joint degree can be obtained from the Graduate Field Assistants in City and Regional Planning or Architecture.
Those interested in the dual degree program should indicate interest in the dual degree on their applications. Students who decide to apply for the dual degree program after they have begun the course[s] of study in either field should apply for admission to both fields and receive formal acceptance by the admissions committee of each field before beginning the second year of graduate study.
