Master of Regional Planning
Category
Urbanism
Description:
The Master of Regional Planning program stresses skills basic to professional planning practice and responds to individual needs and interests. Students must complete four semesters of course work with an average of 15 credits per semester (four or five courses). Each student works with an advisor to select courses appropriate to a specialized interest and to identify and develop a topic for an independent writing project. Three Concentrations The faculty strongly recommends to students that they concentrate in one of three areas of planning: Land Use and Environmental Planning, Economic Development Planning, or International Studies in Planning. A concentration provides a substantial base of knowledge; it is preparation for professional work; and it makes a student especially attractive to prospective employers. Concentrations also offer opportunities to participate in practical, client-based workshops and special projects. Students may design individual concentrations in consultation with a faculty advisor. Land Use and Environmental Planning This concentration focuses on the forces and actions that directly affect the physical character, transformation, rehabilitation, and preservation of cities and regions. Topics of study include, among others: development of land use and urban design plans design and implementation of "smart growth" policies evaluation of infrastructure requirements design and analysis of public spaces in cities strategies for increasing housing opportunities strategies for making cities more sustainable redevelopment and preservation of urban neighborhoods The concentration offers each student opportunities to develop knowledge and skills, such as: creating land use plans and their implementation tools, including elements of zoning and subdivision ordinances, growth management measures, and capital improvement plans developing and using models to assess whether and how well land use plans work drafting urban-design guidelines and policies conducting environmental impact assessments using and developing geographic information systems (GIS) facilitating community participation resolving environmental and development disputes Graduates whose studies focus on land use and environmental planning are likely to go on to positions as land use planners at the local and regional level, as environmental analysts with state and national agencies and non-governmental organizations, and as infrastructure and comprehensive development planners in the private sector. Economic Development Planning This concentration focuses on the economies of neighborhoods, cities, and regions with the intent of producing more informed and effective economic development policy. Topics of study include, among others: development and application of analytical tools needed to produce first-rate economic development plans and provide an array of development incentives community development special needs of excluded, poor and segregated communities use of quantitative and qualitative methods to address social inequalities the politics of planning relationships between economic development and community development The concentration offers each student the opportunity to develop knowledge and skills that include, among others: creating economic development strategies and plans analyzing local and regional economies with tools including regression analysis, input-output, and economic base analysis identifying strengths and weaknesses in the regional labor force applying geographic information systems to spatial policy analysis using and integrating participatory action research in economic development and community planning processes developing and applying various analytical tools to urban public finance issues Graduates whose studies focus on economic development planning are likely to go on to positions as urban economic policy analysts for regional and national agencies; as specialists working for non-profit community development corporations (CDCs); and as project managers for infrastructure and community development finance programs. International Studies in Planning This concentration focuses on urban, regional, and international development processes and their implications for people's lives and livelihoods in diverse international contexts. Particular attention is paid to critical assessment of international development policies and plans and to the design and implementation of programs that reflect a commitment to environmental sustainability, economic vitality, and social justice. Concentration courses offer students the opportunity to learn to use the tools of mainstream and critical economic and social analysis to: plan, implement, and evaluate international urban and regional development projects and programs incorporate race, class, and gender equity concerns into international development practice design urban programs and policies that contribute to environmental sustainability foster broad and meaningful participation in development programs build organizational capacity to design and execute successful projects and programs In addition, ISP provides opportunities to learn about and test new approaches to development in international settings through intensive collaborative workshops; summer internships with government agencies, research institutions, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs); and internships with international institutions affiliated with the College of Architecture, Art, and Planning's Program in Rome. This concentration attracts mid-career professionals with experience in development agencies and programs, as well as those with more limited international experience who wish to build a career in development planning. ISP fosters scholarly exchange on international planning issues with international conferences and workshops as well as informal talks by practitioners. Student research abroad may be supported by special travel grants and through membership in the International Consortium for Sustainable Community Development and Planning. Graduates whose studies have focused on international planning are likely to go on to positions as policy analysts and project managers in national and inter-national development agencies, government foreign assistance programs, and NGOs.
